1. The bar is never the only way to get the information

The segmented bar is the product. So every bar on this site has a plain-text equivalent, opened by the Read the bar as text control beneath it, which states each role by name, how much of it is left at the current setting, and whether anything can carry it.

Each segment also carries its role name in text, not only its colour. Colour is never the only indicator of anything on this site.

2. The hatch, not the hue

The one decisive visual fact — that sweetness is the only job something else can carry — is shown by a diagonal hatch rather than by a colour, so it survives being seen in greyscale or by anyone who does not distinguish these colours. The hatch appears on that segment and on no other, and the same fact is stated in words in every reading.

3. Contrast

Contrast ratios were measured rather than estimated, and the measurements are recorded in a comment at the top of the site’s stylesheet. Body text sits at 14.21:1 and secondary text at 4.86:1, both against the page background. Two of the four role colours are not usable for text at all, which is why role names are set below the bar in the main text colour rather than inside the coloured segments at small sizes.

4. Keyboard

Everything is reachable and operable with a keyboard alone. The reduction slider is a native range control, so the arrow keys, Home and End all work on it, and there is a numeric field beside it for anyone who would rather type a figure than drag anything. Focus is always visible.

5. Motion

The only thing that moves is the width of the segments, and only briefly. If your system is set to reduce motion, that animation is switched off and the hero shows the before and after side by side as two static bars instead.

6. Print

The change-preview card is laid out to print on one side of A4 in black and white, with the role names and the readings intact.

7. Where it is not yet good enough

We test with keyboard navigation, with a screen reader and with automated checks, but no site is finished.
